About Room 13

Room 13 is a non-profit organisation that uses art and creativity to develop and empower children to become the best that they can be.

Room 13 South Africa has been running for 16 years, after adopting the idea from Scotland in 2004. Currently, we have 6 studios based in schools across the provinces of Gauteng, the Free-State and Mpumalanga.

We aim to create a safe place where children can go every day after school, to develop their self-esteem and sense of purpose. The principle is that any child can be an artist and every child is welcome.

Our studios are managed by the learners along with an Artist-in-Residence who facilitates the activities, using their own creative skills combined with the interests of the children. Activities can range from drawing, painting, printing, sculpture to theatre and performance. business and entrepreneurial skills are encouraged through the day-to-day management of the studio, exhibitions and the selling of their creative products.

Why Art?

More than self-expression, we use art and creativity to help kids develop their self-esteem and sense of purpose. By developing their artistic expression across visual arts, performance and literature, we aim to inspire and unlock children’s imagination. And we instil essential business skills by encouraging each studio to run as an individual business.

How we work

Learners take full responsibility for sustaining the project at their school, by forming studio management teams that look after their supplies, budgets, targets and make overall decisions about their development.
The learners are supported by an Artist-In-Residence who is from the community and also qualified to teach art. To keep our learners inspired and broaden their career opportunities, we host ‘show-and-tell’ sessions with professional creatives from diverse disciplines.

Our programmes

Our Programmes

Room 13 seeks to unlock children's imagination by developing their artistic expression across various art forms, in particular visual arts, performance arts and literature. At the same time Room 13 teaches these children essential business skills, as they run the studio as their own business, taking full responsibility for the sustainability of the project. The learners are supported by an Artist-In-Residence who is from the community and is qualified to teach art.

From our Artists-in-Residence (AiR) we receive ongoing reports to allow us to stay in touch with classroom activities and student progress. Examples of reports include: Monthly reports, Monthly time sheets, Learners register, Quarterly newsletter for stakeholders
